[Feed from FitnessAnywhere.com] In this installment of “Ask the TRX Doctor,” Dr. Perkash fields a question from member Paul S. on the best TRX exercises for prevention of back pain, especially for someone who is short on time. Question: I am a regular TRX user and affiliate, and I have the TRX Healthy Back DVD, and it is excellent. Like many people, I sit for many hours in front of my computer while working. Several years ago, I fell down a flight of stairs and broke one of the disks in my lower spine. After several months of suffering from sciatic pain, I had part of the disk removed, and I am doing fine now, thanks to a great surgeon and my TRX. As part of my rehab, I have been performing exercises on my TRX, and I believe it has helped to strengthen my spine and prevent back pain. But I am wondering, in your opinion, what are the best TRX exercises to prevent lower back pain and sciatica from occurring in the first place? What would be your top three TRX back exercises for someone who is short on time? Your response may prevent millions of people who [...]

Why is core stabilization important? What is core stabilization? Three exercises to increase core stability. Increasing Core Stability: Every move we make is dependant on two things (1) muscles to hold us steady and (2) muscles to actually move us. This is referred to as core stabilization when talking about how your trunk muscles keep your spine and body stable and in control. This stability plays a critical role in: Posture, Balance Efficient and Powerful Movement, Injury Reduction

[ by: Andrew Vontz - a journalist and trainer who writes for Fitness Anywhere. He programs functional training for endurance sports and life.] Since its inception, Fitness Anywhere has advocated that people stand up to train. Going to a gym to sit down in a machine to “workout” after a day spent seated—during a commute, at the office, at the dinner table and while watching TV—creates dysfunctional bodies and can breed bad health. Suspension Training on the TRX forces the trainee to use core strength to stabilize the body. Every movement executed on the TRX, from the TRX Biceps Curl to the TRX Side Plank, taxes the entire system as an interconnected series of kinetic chains, just as the body moves in the world and sport. It’s old news that sitting is bad for you, but the rest of the world is starting to catch up with the Fitness Anywhere way of thinking. Recently, the New York Times’ Olivia Judson penned a piece for that publication’s Opinionator blog looking at recent studies about the health impact of sitting all day. Fitness Anywhere has researched how long the average person spends sitting each day and includes this information in our STC [...]

In today world of exercise and fitness there are tons of new workout methods and styles. We hear new fangled terms like periodization , hypertrophy and planes of motion, just to name a few. Let me take a moment to discuss that last one, planes of motion. This is also referred to as degrees of freedom, more specifically, 3 degrees of freedom. The 3 planes of motion are as follows: Sagittal: movement from front to back Examples are curls and extensions of arms or legs as well as lunges and squats. Frontal: Movement from side to side Examples are lateral raises (for shoulders) and side lunges. Traverse: Horizontal or rotational movements Examples are bench presses or cable wood chops. Why is this information important? Because if you can balance your workout routines through all three degrees of freedom, then you will become a stronger athlete. You will also significantly reduce your risk of injury due to having exposed all your muscles to movements that require them to work together and become stronger as a unit. Athletes that focus on individual body parts and muscles often times create workout routines that are incredibly unbalanced in this regard. These routines, while creating strength in [...]

I’ve had my TRX straps for about 6 months now, and I can honestly say that the new hasn’t worn off yet. I’ve bought myself an eye bolt and screwed it into the ceiling (instead of purchasing the $35 mount from TRX) in my living room. As a result, my youngest daughter, which is 12, can’t walk by it without playing on it in some way. That alone speaks for it’s durability. She stands on the handles and swings mostly, but she also does some of the actual exercises. My wife has a routine that I’ve put together for her that she does regularly that only takes about 10 – 15 minutes depending on how she’s feeling that day. On to my point, what makes ‘em so great? Several reasons: you can wad ‘em up into the carry bag and take ‘em with you anywhere, you only need a single anchor point (all other suspension straps require 2 anchor points, or at least 2 straps to attach to the same point), increase intensity of normal body weight exercises, constantly working the core, go heavy or light with simple, quick shifts of body position, work out through all three planes of [...]

OK, so I’ve got this business trip this Saturday and I told my wife that I was looking forward to using my TRX Suspension Straps in some of the cool parks and hiking areas that I’ll be around in Germany. Her response cracked me up. It went something like this: Me: I’m looking forward to taking my straps to Germany Wife: You can’t take my straps! How will I do my workouts? Me: Use the homemade ones. Wife: I don’t want to use those, they’re all dirty and not very nice Maybe you had to be there, but all I could do was crack up. The fact is, I could take my homemade ones but since they’re two separate straps, they’re not as convenient to use in a hotel room or at some random spot on a hiking trail. My wife AND two daughters do enjoy having the TRX straps hanging in the living room. You can’t see it in the picture, but I’ve screwed an eye bolt into one of my ceiling rafters and attached the straps to that. I thought I was going to catch some grief from my interior designer wife because it’s not the most appealing [...]

So I finally went through a full workout with my TRX straps. Yes, I’ve had workouts with my homemade set but this workout was following the TRX strength DVD (for the most part). I didn’t follow it completely because I felt some portions of it were a little too easy so I substituted a couple of my favorite moves. Since receiving my straps, I’ve joined the TRX community & forum, I’ve accepted the 40/40 challenge, and learned about several intense exercises that I haven’t seen before. Not that they’re kept secret from anyone, I just hadn’t seen them before joining the forum. It’s late so I’m going to try and make this quick, I’m certain I’ll be posting a lot on this subject. The most significant thing that captured my interest with todays workout was just how much balance and core muscles are involved in your entire workout. With practically every exercise some form of balance is required and the core group is constantly activated because every exercise is performed using body weight and leverage. Check it out for yourself Being involved in MMA myself it’s clear why combat athletes (grapplers, wrestlers, etc..) love these straps. In sports of this [...]

So, today is Saturday and I haven’t been able to go through a complete workout with my TRX straps. I have been able to hit a few exercises and work up the heart rate several times on the spur of the moment. That in and of itself, I think, speaks volumes. The fact that with just a few minutes spare time I was able to work every part of my body, get my heart rate up, and build some muscular endurance without having to lift a single “weight”, makes this product an outstanding asset. I know I’ve shown you how to make a home made version of these straps, so check out this vid on the differences, and see my opinion (if you haven’t guessed already, I’m very much pro TRX). Beginning Monday I hope to start shooting more videos of my TRX workouts and progress.

I just received my real TRX training straps in the mail yesterday. It only took 3 days to get them with standard UPS ground shipping that was free with my order. If you’ve looked over my blog you’ve no doubt seen my homemade training straps. Well I loved those so much that I wanted to try out the real deal, as well as pick up some of their workout DVD’s for some ideas. I, truely, am NOT disappointed! The product quality is top notch, as well as the DVD’s. I took ‘em for a short test drive to see if there was much difference between my homemade version and the original, and yes, there’s a difference. Like there was any doubt in your mind that I was going to say that. I’ll shoot a video and give some details about the differences and try to get that up with-in the next couple days. For now, I’ve joined their on-line community and accepted the 40/40 challenge. My first attempt resulted in a 30/30. I could’ve hammered out a few more push-ups, however, my form on my last 2 or 3 rows started to suck. I’ve got some work to do, but [...]
